This year marks the 53rd anniversary of the 1969 “May 13 Incident”. Six organizations including PESAWA, Persatuan Rakyat Sejiwa Malaysia, KLSCAH Civil Rights Committee, LLG Cultural Development Centre Bhd, Chan Deng Culture & Arts Society Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur Eng Choon Hoey Kuan are jointly organizing two events: a memorial ceremony and an online discussion, to commemorate the incident, honor the victims, and explore its historical significance.

The memorial ceremony will take place on 8 May 2022 (Sunday), at 9.00am at the Sungai Buloh May 13 Memorial. Families and descendants of victims, as well as members of the public are warmly invited to attend, with registration starting at 8.30am. This year’s theme is “The Past Does Not Go with the Wind”. The organizers have invited a Selangor State Executive Councilor to be the guest of honor. Religious leaders from Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Christianity, and Catholicism will conduct prayers and rituals so that the more than 100 victims buried at the cemetery may rest in peace.

During the ceremony, a flower offering ritual will be held. In addition to the guest of honor and committee representatives laying wreaths, attendees will be invited to freely place flowers at each tombstone to pay tribute to the innocent victims.

Additionally, renowned director and local dialect artist Chong Keat Aun, along with musician Yii Kah Hoe, have been invited to perform poetry recitations and musical accompaniment on-site.

The memorial ceremony will be held physically and via Facebook live streaming, with two live streams available:

In addition to the memorial ceremony, the organizers have arranged a free online discussion session on 27 May 2022 (Sunday), at 8.00pm. The theme is “Overcoming the Fear in Memory: From Taiwan’s 228 Incident to Malaysia’s 513 Incident”.

The organizers believe that the May 13 Incident should no longer be used to instill fear in the new generation. Instead, it deserves thorough and in-depth exploration to reveal the truth, ultimately leading to reconciliation within the nation and among its communities.

The speakers for the online session are Professor Yeh Hao from the Department of Political Science at National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and Professor Chin, Ken Pa from the Department of Philosophy at Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan. The discussion will be conducted in Mandarin. Professor Chin is a Malaysian.

Both professors will analyze how Taiwan’s 228 Incident progressed from conflict and division toward reconciliation. Professor Chin will also explore how Malaysians can overcome the fear embedded in the memory of the May 13 Incident, allowing society to heal and move forward. The session aims to offer Taiwan’s experience in handling the 228 Incident as a reference for Malaysia.
