Snow in Midsummer – Fundraising for PESAWA’s Operating Fund

The film Snow in Midsummer, directed by Malaysian filmmaker Chong Keat Aun, will be officially released in cinemas across Malaysia in mid-July.

The May 13 Incident and the memorial cemetery are among the story elements and settings featured in the film. As such, PESAWA (Persatuan Sahabat Warisan Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor) feels a strong sense of responsibility to support the film by organizing a special screening. The screening will take place on 19 July 2025 (Sunday), 8.00pm at Dadi Cinema Pavilion KL.

Sponsors who contribute RM1,000 will receive two VIP tickets, while standard tickets are priced at RM100 each, with seating arranged according to ticket numbers.

PESAWA hopes that discussions and activities related to the May 13 Incident will no longer be treated as sensitive or highly restricted taboos in Malaysia. The screening of this film marks an important step toward a more open environment for exploring the history of May 13, allowing for broader perspectives and deeper understanding of the event.

For many years, PESAWA has organized annual memorial ceremonies and talks related to the May 13 Incident. The purpose has always been to promote reconciliation, understanding, and forgiveness. By transforming painful historical memories into meaningful reflection, PESAWA hopes the authorities will gradually declassify related historical materials so that the public no longer fears discussing May 13. Only by openly addressing this painful past can the lingering wounds be acknowledged and healed, and the once sensitive historical issue can be better understood without becoming an obstacle to ethnic harmony.

Snow in Midsummer is jointly produced by Malaysia’s Sunstrong Entertainment together with four partners from Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. The film premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, where it received the Film Art Special Mention, and it was also selected as the opening film of the 60th Golden Horse Awards, earning nine nominations. Most of the people involved in the production are Malaysians. As Malaysians, this is a film we should all watch.

During PESAWA’s special screening of Snow in Midsummer, director Chong Keat Aun and actors Wan Fang and Pearlly Chua will be present to interact with the audience, share their experiences, and take photos together.
